Movie & Music Mill… Ratatouille

August 7, 2007

Ratatouille is not just another Pixar animation as you may have expected. To me, it’s probably the only movie I will remember for 2007. Watch how expressive Remy the little chef is under the creative strokes from Pixar. The plot is simple but not shallow. Wise quotes are regularly dispensed without being corny. Lines like “….a thief takes and a cook makes” sure brings home the message short and crisp for your kids. Genuinely funny moments are also aplenty and you are guaranteed there will be no slapstick actions borrowed from Eddie Murphy’s. After watching the movie, the next time you see a rat, you may just want to give it a sympathetic squeeze instead.

Travis – Closer

Light and breezy brit rock. Simple lyrics, sincere delivery with melodies that will linger on for a while…. and a little longer…

Michael Bublé – Everything

Check out Michael Bublé’s Everything. Typical Bublé’s. He’s a great artiste but it just seems like even his original new songs still sound like one of his cover versions. Could be that familiar 70’s rhythm or simply his elvis-sque voice. Or a combination of both. Maybe he should just cut down on cover versions.

Movies & Music Mill

May 14, 2007

I’m into quirky pop/rock lately though not the dumb ones.

Alfie by Lily Allen has really hilarious lyrics about a brother who’s a slouch. Just as good are Mika’s Love Today and Grace Kelly. These are not new hits but they are being played here (Bangkok) quite regularly just recently.

If you’ve any good recommendations on music and movies, I would appreciate if you could share with us. For Mandarin songs too.

Natasha Bedingfield -  I Wanna Have Your Baby

One of the most dim-witted song as far as I can remember. She’s a good singer and this self composition is not doing her justice. If not for her rendition, the song is really beyond redemption, in my opinion. Just listen to the lyrics. Never mind, just read the title… It’s doing well on the chart though. May just be my age… sigh.

Movies & Music Mill…

Fret not, this is not another vigilant highbrow movie critic. Just simply sharing the movies and music I had enjoyed (or otherwise).

Watched Pan’s Labyrinth and Spiderman 3 recently. Yes, Pan’s Labyrinth. Only shown recently here in Bangkok. Been a long time since I’ve come across such a great fantasy movie without the epic hype around it. The mood, the acting, the props… everything is near perfect. Even the haunting lullaby is, to me, a masterpiece. Simple yet affects one’s mood in seconds. But then again, why such an eerie tune for a lullaby?

As for Spiderman 3, it’s very entertaining. I give it a 3.5/5 for its genre. Not a dull moment. But don’t expect too much in-depth development on each character’s character. This is a comic, not a novel. Please convey this to any real life movie critic if you happen to know one. But there’s one complain here. Harry the villian is kind of ’suay’ leh. All the unlucky things just befall him. First the death of his father then girlfriend run away and also kena disfigured. Now, dead. Being this suay, I think he’s better off dead. RIP.
